“Drinking a beer,” Jacey stated the obvious.
“Mind if I join you?” She waved for a drink herself.
“Not at all,” Carson answered after glancing at Jacey, who shrugged.
“I am trying to figure out where to go on my picnic with Derek tonight,” Shelby said, wrapping her red tipped nails around the beer glass. “I want to make sure it’s special.” Her eyes narrowed as they landed on Jacey.
“Hope you have fun,” Jacey offered while inside she fumed. Derek had said it was over with Shelby.
“I’m sure we will. We haven’t spent much time alone with the wedding coming up, so you know…” She trailed off, leaving an implication of what was going to happen.
“Ready to go, Jace?”
“Yeah. I am. I have to deliver this stuff before he comes looking for me. Shelby, nice to see you.” Jacey stood up from the table as she tossed money down to cover all three drinks. “It’s on me. Have fun tonight.”
Then she walked off with Carson following her.
“Wanna have dinner tonight, Jace?” Carson asked as they got to their vehicles.
“Do you mind if Caleb comes along?”
“Not at all. We could have a picnic as well,” he offered.
“You’re on,” she replied with a smile. “I’ll make us a nice dinner. How about I pick you up? We can take the Jeep, because Shadow will be coming along also.”
“Lookin’ forward to it,” he said with a charming smile of his own. “What time?”
“Six?”
“See you then, runt.” He grinned as he got in his vehicle and left.
Chapter Twenty-Two
Derek heard the Jeep coming up the drive and his heart skipped a beat. Jacey was coming here. He smiled as he walked to the porch along with Honey and Carson.
The Jeep stopped but remained running as Carson smacked his cousin on the shoulder. “Later, man,” he began, going down the steps.
“Where are you going?” Derek asked.
“Dinner. Jacey, Caleb, and I are having a picnic. And Shadow. We got the idea from Shelby. She said the two of you were going to have a private one tonight.” He jogged down the steps, waving over his shoulder as he jumped into the Jeep. Saying something to the people in there caused them to laugh.
Jacey pulled out of the driveway without saying a word to either Derek or Honey. With a sigh, Honey hugged herself. At the same time Derek was trying to calm down enough so he didn’t kill his cousin. He was humoring Shelby one last time with this dinner, regardless of how little he wanted to go.
“She hates me,” Honey cried as she leaned against the corner post.
That comment grabbed Derek’s attention. “What are you talking about? Jacey loves you.”
“Not after what I did to her today.”
Eyes narrowed. “What did you do today?” His instinct to protect Jacey was alive and well.
“I told her basically that I hated her for what she did.”
“What did she do?” Derek had a sinking feeling he knew what it was about, but if that was the case why wasn’t his cousin mad at him also?
“She went behind my back and had some people dig into David’s past. Then she told me all these lies about him being into strip mining. Basically she made it out that he was marrying me just to get the land. And they had been married many times before.” Her words were pushed out in a rush.
“Blanche Honoria,” Derek said sternly, an action that shut his cousin up right away, for he almost never used that name for her.
“What?”
“When has Jacey ever lied to you?”
The question stopped her for a second. “Never,” she responded quietly. “She hasn’t ever lied to me.”
“Then why would she do so now?”
Honey’s eyes grew wide as she looked up at her cousin. “She wouldn’t.” She didn’t flinch when Derek put his arms around her.
“What else did she say?” he asked as his hands rubbed his cousin’s back.
Honey filled him in on things he already knew, but never once did she mention that Jacey had told her Derek had been right there with her through the whole thing.
Derek allowed his gaze drift out from the farm as he wondered what Jacey had been thinking when she took the full blame. Then he wondered what the hell she was doing out on a date with their son and his cousin.
* * * *
Sitting on the checkered blanket, Jacey watched as Carson played with her son. She had a smile on her face as they ran back and forth. It was a wonderful evening and she was glad that she had accepted his offer for dinner.
“Mama!” Caleb yelled as he ran by towards the edge of the water. “Watch me, Mama.”
“I’m watching, sport, I’m watching.”
Carson crashed down on the blanket beside her. “Wow, he wore me out.” Grabbing a glass of lemonade, he took a long drink. “He’s a great kid, Jace. You and Derek made one hell of a kid.” Her eyes cut over towards him. He watched her. “I knew the second I saw him. He looks like Derek did at that age, just darker.”
“I didn’t know until I saw him at the diner the first night I was here. Everyone knows, don’t they?” she asked, not really requiring an answer.
“I’d bet so. At least everyone in our family does. We’re so proud that we have a nephew and Uncle Frank and Auntie Ro have a grandbaby.” He grabbed her hand. “Are you staying?”
Gripping his hand in return, she answered with complete honesty. “I don’t know, Carson. I don’t know.”
Brushing a kiss on the back of her hand, he opened his mouth to say something when a deep voice interrupted them. “You two are looking pretty chummy.”
Derek. Jacey swallowed down the immediate tremor his voice always brought to her. Carson winked at her before a roughish smile crossed his face. “We are on a date, what are you doing here?”
Jacey couldn’t stop the smile that came to her face. She knew what Carson was up to and was more than happy to play along. Serve him right if he got jealous., She was pissed he was going out with Shelby.
“Really, Derek, with all the places around couldn’t the two of you find your own place to be without interrupting our date?”
He clenched his jaw as her gaze landed on him and the blonde woman next to him.
“I don’t mean to ruin your date,” he said. “But Honey was looking for you, Jace.”
She shrugged her shoulders. “I’ll see her later. Is that all?”
“Come on, Derek, we have our own date to finish up. We delivered the message.”
“Yes, Derek,” Jacey said in a syrupy voice. “You should go and finish up your own date. It has been so long since you two have been alone.” Dropping Carson’s hand, she stood up and whipped off her pants and shirt, leaving her in a very revealing bikini. “Let’s go swimming, Carson. We’ve waited long enough after eating.”
“Right behind you, Jace,” Carson said as his removed his shirt and pants, leaving him in a pair of swimming trunks. “Bye, y’all.” He waved as he smiled at Derek. “Have fun on your date.”
* * * *
It was after eleven and Jacey was once again walking at night. She had enjoyed her date with Carson. Her son was safely tucked into bed and now she and Shadow were enjoying the night air.
As she walked along the road she passed under a thick branch that stuck out over the road. “What are you doing up there?” she asked.
“Waiting for you.”
“Well come down then.” She stopped and waited for the person to jump down.
Shadow sniffed the person and then walked off, presumably to do his own thing.
“How did you know?”
“Don’t ask questions you already know the answer to, Derek. What did you want to see me for?” Jacey was proud that her body wasn’t giving herself away. Too much.
The moon filtered down on them. Derek placed himself directly in front of her. “Why didn’t you tell Honey that I had something to do with you digging into the Turners’ pas
t?”
Jacey shrugged. “I figured if she was totally pissed at me, like she got, at least you knew the truth and would be around to protect her. Besides, I did it, not you.”
One large hand gathered a fistful of her thick hair and held her still. “You shouldn’t have to protect me, Jace. It’s my job to protect you.”
“I don’t need your protection,” she said automatically.
“I know you don’t. But I want to protect you.” His thumb trailed over her cheek.
Feeling her resolve weakening, Jacey lifted her eyes to his. “Did you have a good time on your date?”
Derek swore. “No, did you?”
“Actually I did. I had a wonderful time. In fact we are going out again tomorrow evening.” Shame on you, Jacey. She smiled as anger flashed across his features.
“Don’t play games with him, Jacey. Or me. You know we’re supposed to be together.” His fist tightened in her hair. “And what the hell is up with you wearing such a small bikini?”
“You don’t own me, Derek,” she warned. “Don’t try and threaten me. And there was nothing wrong with my swimsuit. Honey wears one that covers less than mine did.”
“Honey isn’t being ogled by my cousin.” His face lowered to hers. “You were.”
“Well, if you need to ogle a woman in a bikini, perhaps you and Shelby should go swimming. Or would that intrude on the other things you two are busy doing?” she hissed.
With his free hand Derek cupped her face gently. “You’re jealous,” he said.
“Am not,” Jacey snapped.
One lean finger tipped her face up towards his. “Yes you are. Admit it, Jacey. It’s tearing you up inside imagining what Shelby and I did on our date.”
I will never admit that to you. “I didn’t know you had such a high opinion of yourself, Derek. I was having such a good time with Carson I forgot all about you.”
“Liar. You don’t forget anything about what we have.” His lips were brushing hers as he spoke in a forceful tone.
“You’re very right about that. I can’t forget something that isn’t there,” she said as she knocked his hand away from her face and stepped back.
He groaned in frustration. “Very well, if it didn’t bother you why do you tense up at the thought of Shelby touching me? Kissing me?” Derek taunted.
“I don’t give a damn about her,” Jacey lied. “If you want to lie with that skank, who am I to stop you?”
“The mother of my child,” he muttered as his lips covered hers.
Damn right I am. Jacey clenched her fists at her side as she tried so hard not to be affected by his touch. Finally, with a groan of surrender, her arms stole up around his neck, bringing them closer together.
Derek slid his hands down to cup her firm ass and lift her off the ground as her legs encircled his waist. Her fingers dug against his scalp as their lips were mashed together.
The kiss was not a gentle one. It was a battle for dominance. Neither of them were willing to give in. Derek stumbled off the dirt road and pressed her back into the bark of the old thick sycamore he had been hiding in.
Hands tore at clothing as they each tried to claim victory of the kiss. As their clothes fell beside them, the bark dug deep into her smooth skin. With one stroke Derek sheathed himself deep within her wet body. Tearing his lips off of hers, he grabbed her full hips and began to drive deep, hard strokes into her.
Each thrust shoved her into the tree trunk, which caused her to cry out. “Tell me,” he ordered between plunges. “Tell me, Jacey.”
“Harder, Derek, harder,” she cried into the night as her full breasts shook with each driving thrust he delivered. A scream rose in intensity as his hands left her hips and landed on her sensitive breasts to pinch the nipples, leaving her to hold herself up against the tree.
She had to reach behind her and grip the thick trunk of the tree she was against. An act which pushed her chest further into his hands. He increased the pressure on her tight nipples and continued to piston his hips.
* * * *
Derek was in agony. The sight of the woman in front of him made him shake with emotions. The muted light from the moon broke through the branches to speckle them.
Her hands were gripping the tree behind her, her back arched as she approached an orgasm. Full breasts would be swaying with every thrust he gave if he wasn’t holding onto them and pinching the pebbled nipples. Flat stomach and a small black patch of hair that pointed to where he had his erection buried up to the hilt. Her strong brown legs were wrapped tightly around his waist.
She was beautiful. “Tell me, Jacey,” he grunted, feeling his body tighten.
“What? Tell you what?” She panted, voice hoarse.
“You know what I want to hear.”
“Okay, I was jealous. I am jealous. I don’t want that bitch anywhere near you,” she ground out as he pinched tighter on her nipples. “Ohhh God, Derek.”
“Come with me, princess. Come on my cock.” He pinched tighter.
Derek let go of her nipples as he felt her muscles contracting around him.
“Harder,” she screamed.
Grasping her hips again, he pounded into her with all he had. Over and over she came on his thick penis.
With a single motion Jacey pulled herself into a sitting position so Derek was holding up her weight totally. Her fingers, that had grasped the tree trunk, now latched onto his shoulders as her head fell back, bringing her nipples to his mouth, a treat he eagerly accepted.
As his teeth grazed one nipple she came again with an amazing rush. And that sent Derek over the edge after her. One more deep stroke and he was pouring his seed deep within her womb.
Sweat poured down both of them. Derek’s legs were wobbly as he walked over to a patch of grass, still buried deep inside her body. Gently he set her down on the grass and stretched out beside her and tucked her up to his hard, sweaty body.
Aside from the night sounds, all they could hear was their raspy breathing. “Did you take the pill this morning?” Derek broke the silence with his question.
“No.” Jacey fought to control her breathing. It was Atlanta all over again, when they made love in different places and positions. She had absolutely no will power when it came to Derek Harmon Moser.
“Are you going to take one?” He rolled to his side, bracing his head upon his hand and looked down at her. One lean finger brushed away hair from her sweaty face.
“No,” she answered truthfully.
“But this time you will let me know?” There was no censure in his voice and that was the only reason Jacey didn’t take offense.
“I will let you know. But we can’t keep doing this. It will only increase the chances of me getting pregnant.”
“I can’t seem to help myself. You make me lose control.”
“I don’t think you are the only one with that problem,” she muttered as she tugged his face down for another kiss.
Under the light of the moon, and guarded by a large dog, the star-crossed lovers returned to the plane where nothing was wrong in their world. It wasn’t until pre-dawn that, with one last lingering kiss, they both went their separate ways and to seek their own beds.
Chapter Twenty-Three
“Mama.” The voice persisted. “Mama, come on, wake up.”
Jacey opened her eyes and looked immediately at the clock. Six in the morning. She had an hour and a half of sleep. “What is it, Caleb?”
“You promised we would begin our workout today. At six,” he said.
Rubbing her eyes, she opened them to see her son in the workout suit she had purchased for him before she had come back to Leeburg. “You’re absolutely right. I did.”
“Didn’t you get any sleep, Mama?”
“Not too much. Go on downstairs and let Shadow out. I’ll get dressed and be down in a few moments.” She smiled as he nodded and scampered out the door.
Flopping back on the bed, she groaned. My whole body hurts. With one more deep breath she
got up and put on a pair of shorts, socks, and a tank top. Then she walked downstairs to find her son whispering with her father by the door.
“Morning, Papa,” Jacey said as she picked up her shoes and sat down to tie them on.
“Morning, Jace. I hear tell you two are going to go start this young man’s workout today.”
Stifling a yawn, Jacey nodded. “Yes, sir. We are going to do some stretches and then begin running. Follow that with some pushups and other workout stuff like that.”
“Like some more company?” her father asked.
“You coming too, Grandpa?” Caleb asked as he waited for his mother to tie her shoes.
“Sure. I could get back into better shape,” he answered as his eyes held his daughter’s.
“Well, we’d love to have you along.” She looked over his attire. “Are you going to change?”
“Probably should, I’ll be right back.” He headed up the stairs and was back a few moments later dressed in running pants and a tee shirt.
Two hours later, Jacey and two very tired men walked up the driveway to their home. Etta Mae sat on the porch and waved at them. “Breakfast is ready after y’all get cleaned up.” She went back to rocking in her chair.
Fifteen minutes later, they were all eating a hearty breakfast when the sound of knocking on the screen door reached them. Shadow ran off, barking and wagging his tail. “I’ll get it.” Jacob Moser went and answered the door. He came back with Honey in tow.
“Morning, Honey,” Etta Mae said.
“Morning, y’all. Jacey,” she said.
“Honey,” Jacey responded in a neutral tone.
“I didn’t know y’all were still eating, I can come back,” Honey began.
“Nonsense, child.” Etta Mae waved her down into an empty chair. “Eat with us.”
Sliding into the chair next to Jacey, she accepted the plateful of food offered to her. “Thank you, Etta Mae.” Honey smiled at her.
